Yes, many of the locations are a little devoid of detail but, on the whole, this is one good-looking title. Each looks great, and special mention should go to the visuals, generally, which are on a par with the PS2 originals. The worlds included are as impressive as ever, and feature locations based upon Snow White, Cinderella, Fantasia, Peter Pan, Lilo And Stitch and more, as well as a selection of Square-created locales. These extras, such as the command deck and impressively deep ability and item management systems, complement the smooth, accessible combat, and wandering around the various worlds is always enjoyable, and as you level up, you really do have a good deal of control over how you’ll evolve. The Gummi ship shooter has been cut out, sadly, but the Command Board is a worthy replacement. It’s a great idea, and one that really works. Using this board you can level up and acquire abilities, instead of solely having to rely on grinding your way through foe after foe. One use of this is the ‘Shotlock’ attack, which can be used, Panzer Dragoon-style, to lock on to multiple foes and fire volleys of energy at them. There’s no MP either, as this has been replaced by Focus. Magic is handled differently too, and this time you’ll have to wait while abilities recharge before you can use them again. The D-Link system lets you share other characters’ abilities, and comes in useful in many situations, perhaps none more so than switching to Aqua’s healing magic when you’re low on supplies. You can then choose to mix these abilities together to form new one should you wish. As you use abilities, these will power up, levelling up to more powerful versions. It’s similar to previous games, but is a little more in-depth this time. This allows players to customise their character ability layout, choosing which abilities and items they can use. Controlling the action is as smooth as ever, and this time it’s beefed up with a number of new features, including a new revised command deck. I can happily say that Birth By Sleep is every bit as good as the previous outings. There’s also a multiplayer component included. Each of these has a very healthy play time of around 15 hours, meaning that the entire single player game will last a very long time, indeed. As of November 2010, Birth by Sleep sold 1.27 million units on PSP.You can choose to play these in any order, and each story crosses over in some way or another with the other two. A demo was first made available at a private party event in August 2008. Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep was announced alongside Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts coded at Tokyo Game Show 2007 on September 21, 2007. The title was inspired by the choice to use the preposition 'by', which is atypical in most titles. The Osaka-based development team would regularly teleconference the team in Tokyo as the development progressed. The team in Osaka were responsible for gameplay creation while the team in Tokyo previously responsible for cutscene creation for Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II were retained for this installment. Nomura has referred to Birth by Sleep as 'Episode 0' (and later, 0.1), being substantially on par with the numbered entries. Birth by Sleep would resume production less than a year later and be developed for a further three years. Production was temporarily halted about half a year in, as Nomura requested that the team develop a PlayStation 2 remake of Chain of Memories to bundle in with Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix in Japan. Genuine development for Birth by Sleep on the PlayStation Portable due to the multiplayer capabilities of the system. As Kingdom Hearts II finished production Nomura wrote story plans for Birth by Sleep, so the team in Osaka modeled the game after these plans. Originally, the project was intended to release as a side entry for the PlayStation 2, with Sora as the prototype for the protagonist. Near the end of June 2005, Square Enix's fifth internal Production Development Division, based in Osaka, approached series director Tetsuya Nomura and were tasked with making a Kingdom Hearts game. Story Worlds and Characters Gameplay Development and Release Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep released in Japan on January 9, 2010, with international releases in September that year. It follows the journeys of Terra, Ventus, and Aqua, about ten years before Kingdom Hearts, as they fight the Unversed and search for the mysterious Master Xehanort. Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep is the sixth title in the Kingdom Hearts series.
